Monolingual Badaawyeet children:
Beja cultural studies center proposed a project to test the efficiency of teaching rural monolingual Bidhaawyeet (Beja's language )speaking children to read and write in their mother tongue, and bridging into Arabic the project was for three schools from Gonob, Gabeet , and a school in klanayib , to select the three school research was conducted to access the current problems encountered in various schools in this areas .the parents of the pupils were consulted , and the nature of the project explained to them .
The aims of the project
The aims of the project was to test whether Arabic skills of children who read and write firstly with their mother tongue , and then bridging into Arabic is better than the Arabic skills of rural children learning in the traditional government school. Starting with grade one and two.
A test scores on standard exams of the students attending the project schools compared with the test scores of students, attending the traditional government schools, the result was that, the Arabic test scores of the project schools children was higher, then a recommendation was made to the ministry of Education, outlining possible changes to the approach of schools in monolingual rural areas of Eastern Sudan.
- Language is the major factor in success, or failure of rural children.
- Monolingual Bidhaawyeet children often become discourage and drop out of schools, because they don’t understand the medium of instruction (Arabic).
- Learning to read and write in one's mother tongue develops confidence in the learner and instills a positive attitude toward school and learning.
- Learning to read and write in one's mother tongue gives the learner a skill that can be transferred to other languages.
- Monolingual Bidhaawyeet children's performance in schools will be improved through beginning their instruction in their mother tongue.
